Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ever feel like math was a bit out of your grasp? Or love math but know a lot of people who find it a bit of a struggle? What if from an early age, math had been right at all of your fingertips? You can help bring a love of math right into the hands of my young students with arithmetic racks!
My kindergarten students are diverse group of eager young students who love to learn.
They are a group of general and special education students learning together on in one classroom community. We are in a Title I neighborhood school located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Queens and my students and their families come from from all over the world, many of them speaking English as a second language. Every day my students look forward to math time and love our school's fun and relevant approach to teaching and learning math. All we need are some tools to further support our learning!
My Project
These math racks are invaluable for helping young students build their number sense by giving them a simple but powerful tool that makes the important landmark numbers of 5, 10 and 20 clearly visible and tangible. These arithmetic racks combine features of the number line, counters, and base-10 models in a way that is accessible to all of my students. My students could use these tools to support their learning in nearly all of their foundational math skills--counting, automatic recognition of quantities, addition, subtraction, multiple combinations to make the same number, solving math story problems and much more--in a way that is not only easy but fun!
In our every changing economy and age of technology, math skills are more important than ever.
Students who start their early math learning on a solid footing (and in a way that feels more like play than work) will be well prepared to enjoy and succeed in their math schooling and future careers. Please help make math accessible and fun for my students!
