Our music department provides our percussionists with an exciting winter percussion program. Students spend many hours inside and outside of the classroom rehearsing, perfecting, and competing with a unique show consisting of only percussion instruments!
Our band kids are incredibly driven and dynamic young men and women.
They spend many hours during the week rehearsing, in addition to all of the individual practice time it takes to make the ensemble successful. The Indoor Drum Line showcases some of our most talented musicians, specifically our percussionists! The students learn the value of teamwork, hard work and dedication. Our section leaders learn how to effectively lead their peers and accept every individual as part of the team regardless of their ability level or background. All of these skills are life skills that the students will use in their futures at work, in their community, and with others. The students learn so much more than just how to be a musician - they learn how to be fantastic individuals!
My Project
Our Indoor Drum line travels all over the state of Florida competing against other ensembles. I wish I could say that quality of equipment doesn't matter, however, truthfully it makes a huge difference! We have not been able to purchase new mallets in over 5 years. After years of use, the mallets lose their shape, yarn comes apart, and some sticks even break. Currently we are down to just a few mallets. With quality mallets, we will be able to give our show diversity of sound, and teach the students how to get these unique varieties out of our instruments. It's so frustrating to go to a competition and see other ensemble with quality equipment. I have incredible instructors who can teach the finesse required to create an outstanding program, but we need the equipment to do so. Having a full set of mallets would allow the ensemble to perform in the most competitive fashion!
The students in our program are great kids.
They are the students who make honor roll, the students involved in community service, students who will make a positive impact in our community. Several of the students/families receive free or reduced price lunches and struggle day to day. I want to provide an atmosphere where students don't have to stress about money. I want to create a level playing field so that our students can compete with the best schools in the state!
