Making Recess A Learning Experience

My students need equipment and resources such as equipment, games, and jump ropes to use at recess to learn new skills and interact with one another in collaborative games while outside at recess everyday.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being bored at recess and having nothing to do? Our five year old school is continuing to add more space for our kids to play, but now that we have a black top with two basketball hoops, we have very little equipment to play with.

I am teaching fourth grade at a Title I school with a population of 96% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch along with over 75% ESL, English as a Second Language.

A large amount of our students live in poverty and have very little at home. My students enter fourth grade with very little hand-eye coordination and experiences to different sports and physical activity outside of school. Our students love to play soccer, but my goal this year is to expose them to new games and activities to promote physical education at recess. Being a previous day camp director, I am continually trying to expose them to new games they can play, but I am continuing to hear students say "I am bored" at recess. They enjoy learning new games that I introduce them to but I know they would also be very grateful for a variety of games to choose from to play with on a daily basis.

My Project

We have just completed a nutrition unit in science and my students understand the importance of exercise and burning calories to be healthy. I hope to provide them with resources to exercise and try new activities during their 30 minutes of PE a day. My goal this year is to expose my students to more activities that they might really enjoy that they wouldn't have ever experienced before. Our new basketball hoops are great for our students, but watching my kids struggle to shoot a basketball, dribble and understand basketball overall, I want to take a few steps back and use the basketballs I ordered to help guide them with the basic skills to use the new basketball hoops to their fullest potential. Our Physical Education teacher is constantly making comments about our students struggles with hand-on coordination, but with this equipment, games, and jump ropes I am hoping to help them in every possible way I can.

My students are grateful for the one playground ball, a few jump ropes, and balls students bring from home on an occasional basis, but I hope to expose my students to more than just jump ropes and soccer at recess this year.

I believe recess can be an educational experience of learning how to work together and collaborate with one another to learn new games. I interact with my students on a daily basis and last week we played duck-duck goose, and I hope we can expose them to more this year.
