My students need the tablet stand and stylus to collaborate as we draw, project, manipulate equations and graphs to tackle real world problems and applications.
How can math become more than just a bunch of pointless numbers on a page? By giving students the ability to create and manipulate equations meaningful learning occurs by making math relevant in my classroom.
My class consists of 64% low income and 52% minority students, mostly comprised of African-American and Latino nationalities.
This make-up effects our mobility as 23% of the students move each year and many students come from single parent homes with the goal of being first generation college graduates. One of the obstacles to this is their lack of experience and technology which can help to make mathematics more visual. The class currently has a set of graphing calculators and an LCD projector, but there is not a smart board or white board which allows us to draw and collaborate our presentations and solutions.
My Project
The iPad stand and stylus will not only combine with our projector to share our work visually and clearly, but provide an opportunity for us to manipulate our problems to develop multiple solutions and make judgments about the best ways to solve problems. Beyond this specific benefit to enhancing our discussions of problem solving will be the added value of improving communication skills through public speaking and critical analysis of presented arguments.
This type of learning will not only provide the ability to share ideas, but students will defend or justify the quality of the arguments presented.
Our classroom will become a real world work environment experience and expand our investigations into areas of student interest. Allowing us to share ideas will empower students to direct their learning, and the technology provided will visually enhance the discussion to give hands-on experience in data driven decision making.
