Imagine this.... 25 children all trying to sound out the word cat. Or better yet all trying to sound out the words to write a sentence. How about hearing these same children all counting to 100 but who are not repeating in unison.Well my teacher made telephones will help make doing all this more fun.
I work at a Title I public school in New York that inspires children from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade.
My school is so amazing that I even send my own son there! In addition, we are a very diverse school with many different backgrounds in one. Many students come in not speaking any English at all and some parents require translators to communicate. Next year my class will consists of 25 five year olds. They enter eager yet unsure of what to expect. I assure them that the year will be fun and engaging with many hands-on activities. Each day is different from the day before, but each day is incredibly inspiring as we learn and grow together! I love what I do and look forward to providing them with many opportunities to succeed in the future. I assure my students that they will have fun with a smile each morning. They are MY students, but OUR future!
My Project
With the help of my skilled husband we will create telephones for each of my future kindergarten children. We will use a piece of 1/2 inch pvc piping and two 90 degree elbow shaped pvc pipe to create the telephone. These home made telephones have helped reduce the amount of "noise" that was heard in my classroom as the children sound out words. Whether it is to write a word, read a word or eventually to read and write a sentence these telephones have a great impact on the students and their progress. The children love to hear themselves speak into the mouth piece as they say a sound to write. The slightest whisper can be heard. They love using the telephones and they are highly effective. My husband and I made them last year and my children had a ball using them whenever possible. What better way to encourage and practice daily reading and writing than with some fun telephone phonics?
These telephones will enhance the abilities of my children by allowing them to focus and concentrate on the task at hand.
It will diminish the amount of distractibility these curious 5 year olds naturally have. No more being distracted by your neighbor who is sounding out or spelling a word. Please consider helping us get the materials needed so I can begin making some telephones.
