Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students start playing music in my classroom at 6:55am, and usually finish playing around 4:15pm. That's in addition to performing, rehearsing and attending concerts during the evenings and on weekends. That's how much we love music!

In a recent interview with the New York Times, one of my eighth grade students said, "Music is everything." Music is an integral part of my students' daily lives and cultural heritage.

We believe all students have a right to an excellent music education. Our school opened in 2006 with a small music program that has grown to include 250 preschool, kindergarten, and 6th-12th grade students in band and general music classes. Our program evolved through collaboration between students and teachers interested in Latin and jazz music. These genres are ideal starting points for our studies because of our school’s location in New York City, which has been central in the development of Latin and jazz music in the US. In the spirit of the cooperative sensibility found in the way Latin and jazz musicians play, students collaborate to perform and serve our community. A key element of music we play is improvisation, which requires lifting one’s own voice and negotiating with the voices of others.

My Project

In my 7th grade general music classes, my students are studying rhythm and Latin percussion. They are composing and performing rhythms, and studying music history and theory. These hand drums are portable and can be played in a variety of ways (while standing, walking, or sitting), allowing for a range of performance possibilities. In my 6th-12th grade band class students need metronomes and tuners for practicing at home and after school. Reeds wear out after a number of weeks, so alto saxophone and clarinet reeds will allow the band students that play these instruments to continue to play.

Donations to this project will help sustain a thriving music program at an urban public school.

They will allow my students to continue to study music, and have the option of pursuing music in college and beyond. My students know they are college bound, and that music will help them achieve their academic and career goals whether they choose to study math or clarinet performance.
