Luray High School's library is quickly becoming the heart of the school. Adding three distinct Makerspace areas: an interactive markerboard, recording studio, and craftspace will allow students to complete content related and extracurricular projects in the hub of the school: our library.
Our school is located in a rural, farming, small town.
We have approximately 400 students in grades 9-12. Our school community teems with spirit. School budget cuts and high unemployment in our local area in the last few years limit the amount of money students and teachers are able to invest in content related and extracurricular projects. Makerspaces provide students and teachers with materials, equipment, access, and physical space to make project based learning and exploration possible.
My Project
The magic of Makerspaces is that they are ever-evolving, student-centered, and student-driven. The choice to add a recording studio, craftspace, and interactive markerboard was decided based on students' needs, interests, and requests. The studio will allow for exploration of music recording, production, and mixing. The craftspace will provide art and craft materials to classroom teachers and individual students for class and extracurricular activities and projects, within a common, shared workspace. The interactive markerboad serves as a forum for conversation, expression, and debate, a doodlespace, and a blank canvas for artistic expression.
Our school library services the entire school, so funding this project means funding the collective imaginations of over 400 students and teachers.
With materials, equipment, and access added to our already existing physical space, students will be able to explore beyond their current means, without limit!
