When children have the opportunity to build, invent and create, they connect to the world of science, technology, engineering, art and math. These are the building blocks of our future. The library is the perfect place to inspire a new group of makers, but we need the materials for our MakerSpace.
How do you connect kids with learning?
In our library, it's by giving students the opportunities to be creators, builders and inventors. Most people think of libraries as just houses of books. Yet, modern libraries are much more than that. They are places where students can come together and participate in activities that empower and teach them new concepts.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and a variety of socioeconomic opportunities. They represent 14 nations from around the world and speak different languages. They love science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM Education), but many don't have access outside of our schools to experiment with these concepts. Students need a space, time and materials to collaborate with peers, think for themselves and create something original. Our new library program will be the answer to those needs.
My Project
I plan to offer a year long library program called Makerspace Mondays. Students will use the K'Nex, Legos, Magna Tiles, origami paper, and Duct tape in assorted activities to enrich their experiences with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM Education). Each week I will introduce a new concept within the STEAM education components. Together we will make a project using our new resources. For example, our first Makerspace Monday will introduce our K'Nex engineering pieces. I will have photos of sample projects they can make, but students will be encouraged to experiment and make an original design. Then through the week they can use the materials to practice and expand their skills. Combining tools and activities with project based learning also blends creativity and innovation- two critical skills needed for future success in life and work, and core components within the 21st century learning framework.
The Makerspace Monday project will teach students to think for themselves, learn about innovation, creation, and the value of hands-on learning.
In other words, our library will be a space where people can not only learn with books, but also with important STEAM education components in a safe, nurturing, and creative environment. Students will learn to stretch their imaginations and harness the power of creativity, essential skills for the development of our future workforce.
