Our library is the school's largest classroom. We collaborate with every class in the school PreK-5th grade. It is a bustling place where students are not just consumers of stories and information, but are also creators of information and story.
Our library serves over 500 students PreK-5th grade in the school.
Our students come from many different cultures, backgrounds, and financial structures, but they all come with an excitement for creating. The participatory culture of our library allows them to take their ideas, create, and connect their work with a global audience.
My Project
Makerspace.com defines a makerspace as a place that serves as a gathering point for tools, projects, mentors and expertise. A collection of tools does not define a Makerspace. Rather, we define it by what it enables: making.
This is exactly the kind of philosophy that drives what takes place in our library with every class in the school. Already we have students who are blogging, designing using google sketchup, inventing robots with Lego Robotics, tinkering with coding, and much more. Over time, we are trying to build our collection of supplies and technology that students have access to in order to allow them to create the projects that they want to create. A 3D printer and supplies would allow them to use a cutting edge technology, but more importantly, it would allow them to create many of the dream ideas that they have on paper and in computer programs.
We already have a group of 2nd-5th graders eager to embody what it means to be a maker, a group of 3rd graders ready to tinker and code, and a group of 1st graders eager to hold their inventions in their hands.
A 3D printer in our media center would allow these students to use the most current of technologies to make their ideas a reality. As more and more students in our school use this cutting edge tool, we will have a larger group of experts within the school to empower even more inventors.
