Our Maker's Space/Science Lab does not have any seating. The students stand for most of the hands-on investigations. Students then sit on their knees or lay on the floor to notebook their results. This type of seating would meet their needs as well as promote core-strengthening.
My 5th grade students come from a suburban socioeconomically diverse city of approximately 10,000 people outside of the Kansas City metro area.
Our school is a Pre-K - 5 building with 500+ students. Our district has recently went 1:1 with iPads in several grade levels, 5th grade being one of them. Our 5th graders are motivated to learn and are excited about the FOSS Science Kits - which promote hands-on STEM experiences for students.
My Project
Students will use the balance ball chairs to conduct science experiments, as well as, notebook nonfiction writing about their research or investigations. Students will not have to lay on the ground or kneel to record their results, make graphs and tables or summarize the engineering principles used during their experiment.
First, the donations will improve the amount of time dedicated to relevant and rigorous scientific learning.
Without adequate and ergonomic seating, the length of prescribed activities is often reduced due to spacing and students standing. Often times, after investigations are completed, the students must bring their supplies and travel back to the 5th grade classroom so they can summarize their findings with traditional seating (tables and chairs).
