My students are design thinkers. They think of unique solutions to design problems. Right now, they lack the technology to truly demonstrate their ideas beyond blue prints and paper mock-ups.
We are a project based learning school, which provides learning opportunities for students to have real-world experiences in our content area.
The class I teach is a combined geometry and graphic design class -- I teach the graphics and multimedia content, my partner teacher is the geometry instructor. We are challenged to create authentic projects where our content can fully align.
My Project
As a combined geometry and graphics class, we feel the MakerBot printer will allow our students to create tangible physical products that demonstrate their mastery in both of our content areas. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of volume and surface area to create designs they've imagined to solve problems they've noticed in the real world. We're thinking beyond just cool toys and gadgets. We're thinking of an IDEO-like atmosphere in the CLASSROOM.
We believe 3D printing is the future of design and having access to this technology at the high school level will help our students lead the way.
President Obama stated "3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost anything." Learning and understanding how 3D printing can change this world for the better will help them to think beyond themselves and consider how they can impact the global community.
