My goal for my junior and senior statistics students is that they would understand the number and statistics that are presented every day to make informed decisions. They need to have calculators to help them make sense of the data.
We are surrounded by statistics everyday.
Some of these statistics are manipulated to get people to change their habits. I want students to understand the statistics to make informed decisions.
My junior and senior statistics students are college and career bound. They come into class initially apprehensive about statistics, but after the first few weeks they are excited about statistics and gathering data. My students are focused on their future and many are looking for scholarships and ways to pay for college as it is not a guarantee for all. The students at school desire to work hard and improve each and every day, especially as school is the best part of the day for some. Many students get their meals here and have very challenging home lives. My goal is to provide students with the critical thinking skills that they need to break the cycle they are in and to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
My Project
With new calculators my students will be able to take their learning home and outside of the classroom. Students will use calculators to analyze statistical data and make predictions. The calculators will allow students to perform calculations quickly so that there can be more learning and less time wasted performing calculations by hand. This speed will allow students to gain a deeper understanding of statistical patterns.
As students grow in their statistical thinking they will be able to better understand the world around them and make informed decisions.
Here is one example:
The average income in the US is around $70,000! You can also say that the average income in the US is $55,000. Both are true statements . $70,000 is the mean value which is easily effected by higher incomes. $55,000 is the median value or the middle value. Students will understand this difference and how it is use to present data.
