My students need books, Legos, robots, and whiteboards, as well as building, engineering, and craft supplies to be used throughout the year for a number of Makerspace activities.
The library is the hub of the school and the place where learning is first and foremost. Students and classes use the library throughout the day for checking out books, research, information literacy, technology help, and much more. A large number of students come to the library during recess.
We are a Title I school, with a large number of students facing financial hardship.
Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds with a wide variety of socioeconomic classes and ethnicities represented.
We have many ELL (English Language Learners) students, a good Special Education program, and teachers who work hard to create a sense of school community and inclusiveness. Despite the struggles that many of our students face at home, they come to school ready to learn and are excited to spend their time in the library. Our students are wonderful Preschool through 5th graders and work hard to be the best that they can be.
My Project
The engineering, robotics, duct tape, scissors, paper, and other supplies will be used throughout the year for a number of Makerspace activities that will be hosted in the library during recesses and after school. Students will be able to explore their creative side through arts and crafts, as well as homemade technology. Education is continually asking students to find answers using formulaic processes, but the Makerspace movement is pushing students to be creative and think outside the box. Makerspaces encourage students to strive for new answers, create innovative solutions, and work collaboratively to explore interests and learn new skills.
By helping support this Makerspace movement, you will encourage creativity.
Our students will learn perseverance, that it is okay to fail as long as you try, and the importance of working collaboratively as a team to solve problems. Students will learn that they are able to do much with few materials, and that they have great potential ahead of them. This project also helps the library continue to become a place of innovation, learning, and exploration of creative possibilities.
