Make Our Classroom Hands-On In The Study Of World Geography
My students need globes, atlases, geography reference books, colored pencils, papier mache clay, wire mesh, acrylic paint, brushes, scissors, foamboard, adhesive, Sharpies, a coloring book, and other materials to work hands-on in the study of our world's geography.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our classroom is a dynamic space where history, geography, and literature come alive to help paint a picture of the greater global community. Students are actively engaged in the study of geography with hands-on lessons and content allowing for an active experience with the study of the globe.
With over 90% of students participating in Free and Reduced Lunch, the study of world geography and global cultures can seem to be a daunting task.
The students need active learning and participation in order to engage with the content and understand the importance and relevance of knowing the world in which we all live. Students are driven to succeed in their studies, and when they are engaged in the content, they make huge gains in the areas of literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving.
My students understand and appreciate the differences and similarities of other cultural groups and regions. We work hard to ensure that our exploration of other cultures and regions around the globe focuses on the unique circumstances that exist geographically and culturally around the world. What we cannot explain, we explore further.
My Project
My students will use the resources we have requested to become actively engaged in the study of geography and maps. It is very difficult to actively engage in geographic study without the availability of globes, atlases, and research materials. The project request allows us the opportunity to purchase materials to get hands-on with the geography of the globe.
Also, colored pencils, papier mache clay, wire mesh, acrylic paint, brushes, scissors, foamboard, adhesive, sharpies, a coloring book, and other art supplies included in the request give us more access to hands-on activities that increase student engagement and comprehension. Focusing on a multiple-intelligence approach to instruction, students will actively participate in the study of geography with differentiated activities and lessons that will hit every different type of learner.
Your support allows the shift from the textbook to real life, hands-on, and engaging content.
Without these resources, it is much more difficult to engage students with the intricate study of history, geography, and cultural awareness required in a globalized society.
