When you envision your child's classroom, do you see a warm, inviting place with lots of light and bright colors? My classroom is full of the light and warmth of student learning, but our outdated orange/brown carpet, dark paneled walls, and complete lack of windows leave something to be desired.
My students range from Kindergarten through third grade.
They are brilliant and dynamic. They love books, science, math, and reading. They are wonderful, caring, empathetic young people. Many of my students struggle with social cognitive impairments that make relating with students and teachers and focusing on school work the biggest challenges at school. Almost all of my students have learning differences in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics that can make school frustrating without the proper materials and support to help them succeed. I am privileged to teach special education in a rural public school serving 500 students. Because our school is in a community with a growing socioeconomic divide between the poor and wealthy, I strive daily to provide an equitable experience to all students.
My Project
The addition of this classroom rug will help brighten our classroom and enhance the learning environment for my students. I chose the alphabet blocks design because it will add color to our room and will provide learning opportunities for all levels of learners- my youngest students can use the alphabet provided to learn letter names, and older kids will be able to use it for sorting words or other literacy activities. In addition, having a comfortable place to sit while reading or listening will provide much needed seating options for my movers and shakers.
The cube chair that we currently have in our room is very old, and well-loved- in fact, since there is only one, students often have to rotate using it. The addition of four new cube chairs will brighten our space and provide opportunities for all children to have more seating options as they work.
This project will make a difference to my students by helping to beautify and enliven the space where we spend so many waking hours.
The additional seating options provided by the rug and the chairs will help all of my learners have more choices so that they can be comfortable while they do the important work of learning.
