Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math is one of the most exciting times of the day for my students! Many of them love math and learning how to manipulate numbers in various scenarios. Peeking into my room during math will reveal interactive stations, small group lessons, and students constantly moving around as they learn!
My students are my heartbeat.
The majority of them come from very poor families and are on every free program that provides food, clothing, etc. that the school has to offer. Because of the poverty level, parental involvement in my classroom is basically non-existent. Therefore, not only do I hardly see the parents, but I cannot ask them to help provide things we need for our classroom, as I already provide all the students with the supplies that they need for the year. However, my students love to be at school and they love to learn. Many of them dread the weekend because of their poor living conditions and lack of attention. Our focus at school is to create lifelong learners, and do what it best for the students, because a child is so much more than a test score.
My Project
I recently attended the NCTM regional math conference and learned so many wonderful strategies to help my students in all areas of math using number lines. I requested two different sets of giant number lines in this project, and by getting it funded, I would be able to implement those strategies to help my students. I would also be able to use the Common Core book and math prompts that I requested to provide my students with more rigorous content on a daily basis and increase their critical thinking skills.
This project will provide my students with the opportunity to have a hands on experience with math concepts across the curriculum and make it more applicable to my students.
They will be able to visualize and understand the concepts behind math strategies and think critically about those strategies. By using these materials, I will be able to provide instruction to my students that they will never forget.
