My Students

Our media center defies the stereotype that libraries are just about books. We believe libraries are about people and ideas, and that books and technology help students share ideas. Developing a media center Makerspace is our next step in allowing students to think creatively and work collaboratively.

Our school is a public high school in rural Maryland with 1,200 students.

Our student body is growing more diverse; the number of ESOL students doubled between the 2013 and 2014 school year. 10% of our students are FARMS students and 13% have an IEP or 504 plan.

My Project

Our students love using their phones and computers, but don't feel comfortable tinkering with technology. They need an open and relaxed (aka grade - free) environment to play around with technology. This requested littleBits kit will allow students to build background knowledge with circuits. As their knowledge grows, they can use littleBits in conjunction with other items. LittleBits will also encourage Science and Technology classes to utilize the media center, and we can pair projects with littleBits and circuit related research.

Little Bits will help our students build 21st century skills like problem solving, creative thinking, and technology literacy.

Little Bits will also help to build our Media Center Makerspace and challenge the assumption that libraries are quiet, sterile, and old fashioned.
