Make Good Stuff and Share! That's my motto this year for all classes. Without digital tools, only visitors to my classroom can appreciate my talented students' work. I want to give all my students, including those without smartphones or tablets, access during class time to the tech tools they need.
Our suburban high school has a vibrant and diverse student population reflected in my own classes, from AP juniors to CP sophomores to English learners from grades 10-12.
Last year I piloted extremely successful TEDtalks and student blogs with one of my sections, and would love to extend the experience to all five. However, although our schools has improved its wireless infrastructure, we lack sufficient computer labs to meet demand. Building my own library of class Chromebooks will provide all students with necessary access to edtech and the ability to share it via websites with real-world audiences for authentic feedback.
My Project
Students will use the Chromebooks, as well as their own smartphones or tablets if available, to create digital content in our classroom. They will collaborate in writing Google docs, record audio and video, conduct internet research, communicate via Skype and Google Hangouts with experts and other schools, and create in ways I have yet to identify. Two of my five sections will develop 20% Time Projects (also described as Genius Hour), in which they will explore deeply topics that engage their individual passions. Eventually we will add a green screen backdrop and lighting to our room to add more dimensions to their videos. Most importantly, they will SHARE their work inside and outside the school.
Donations to building our Chromebook library will create equal access within my classroom to all the edtech our school is providing.
Based on my AP students' success with their TEDtalks and blogs last year, I believe that all my students will grow in confidence and skills as they create and share using technology tools. We look forward to sharing our successes with our donors.
