Keeping a family healthy is tough, keeping a family of 150 healthy is really tough. While trying to keep that large family healthy, keeping them supplied with the things they need while in the classroom can be a real challenge.
My students come from a variety of homes and backgrounds.
We have military students, low socioeconomic students, learning challenged students, and students who are new to the country. Many of them have a hard time getting the pens, pencils, and paper that they need for school. Asking them to provide tissues and and other small things seems to be more than anyone should ask of them. The small things add up fast and they should not have to choose between lunch and supplies. There are many hurdles they have to jump through due to their economical problems.
My Project
It is tough trying to provide supplies for my students, who cannot provide for themselves. I have purchased many supplies out of my own pocket, but it is getting tougher. Staplers break from heavy use, tissues are needed for the sniffles, cleaning supplies are needed to wipe down desks, and the school doesn't provide enough of these when they do supply them.
They have enough hurdles to jump through, providing them with some of the basic supplies such as pens, colored pencils to use in the classroom, and scissors allows them to have less hurdles to face in order to have a productive time in the classroom. Students need to be able to participate in class activities without the fear of finances.
The students of today are tomorrow's leaders.
The idea of "pay it forward" does mean something to them. They realize that things that are given to them have an impact on them and do come at a cost. They realize that the generosity they are shown now is a bill that they need to be pay in the future, when they are in the position to, by helping out people who are less fortunate. Students of today must be invested in so that they will have the opportunity to invest in future generations
