Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Gossip and bullying starts very early, and students loose their serenity. I have girls and boys crying after recess because "so and so" said unpleasant things to them, or they felt left out or pushed aside. Offering hands-on activities during recess, I believe, can avoid all the drama.
My school is an inner city public school in a low income community where gangs are active, stray dogs are roaming, and schools are one of the safest places to be.
My students are in fourth grade. I am planning to loop with them into fifth grade. All of my students qualify for free lunch and breakfast. Many of their families have overwhelming life situations. We have a parent center that is growing because as a school we believe that building community is the best way to change a neighborhood. All teachers of my school are committed to build an environment for college readiness and success; and our school scores are going up relentlessly.
My Project
I am requesting crochet hooks and colorful yarn. I want my students to learn how to crochet and create special projects and gifts for their friends and families. I noticed that with all the rigorous, academic curriculum, we are not addressing hands-on, artistic activities. Hands-on activities are the ones that give students the freedom to create and be themselves. Through hands-on activities, students gain confidence and dream new horizons. Since we put a lot of academic pressure on the students, often they act out during recess. Bullying and disrespect happens on the yard because students do not know how to calm themselves down and cope with their stress accumulated. Crocheting helps students to learn self discipline, concentration, and patience, skills they need in their social interactions.
I believe that the satisfaction to learn something new and finish a project will bring students a great sense of accomplishment and empowerment.
Through my crochet project, I want to offer my students an alternative recess activity that can bring groups of students together.
Crafts that promote concentration, creativity, patience, and collaboration are a calming and soothing influence on children's lives.
