Look kids! Big Ben! Parliament! And the Louvre and the Vatican!
My students need a trip to Europe. They need to experience other languages, cultures, food, & people for themselves.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you flew on an airplane? Many of my students, who see the beautiful Chicago skyline from their bedroom windows, have never been downtown, let alone out of the country. I want them to experience the world outside of their "hood" and see the places we talk about in class.
My students are bold, brave, and curious individuals who live in a community where those qualities are not always appreciated.
They are explorers, and academics, and creative wunderkinds who make me laugh, sigh, and sometimes cry, everyday. My students are kids who I want more than anything to see the world outside of their doors, and beyond. They are students who I would willingly fly for eight hours on an airplane with, despite my fear of flying. Approximately 95% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch in our neighborhood public school, but are willing to share what they have with others, and give the shirt off of their back to help someone else with even less. The are kind and wonderful young people who inspire me everyday.
My Project
Many of my students have not traveled outside the four block radius of their neighborhood, let alone left the country. In my British Literature class, every time I share an experience I had during one of my visits there, my class grows silent and students stare in wonder at the thought of seeing Buckingham Palace or watching dress rehearsal at the Globe Theater. I know the first time I traveled to Europe I returned home a little bit different, maybe even a little more confident. I want that for my students. I want them to see what the rest of the world is really like, I want them to hear French and Italian being spoken in the streets. I want them to feel a confidence they have not felt before, and bring it home with them, and take it with them as they continue to travel, and go to college, and become successful adults. Maybe it seems silly to think that a little trip could do all that for a person, but it can.
This is easily the most daunting thing I have ever undertaken with my students.
It is overwhelming, but every time a student traveler enters my classroom, I know it is all worth it. They have experienced so much in their short lives, and I want them to experience something so great it literally changes their lives in amazing ways. Students will begin to believe they are mature, responsible, confident, worldly individuals who have something positive to contribute the the world, at home and abroad.
