Imagine sitting in class and listening to the presenter. There's an engaging story and a question is prompted. You turn to your partner to discuss the prompt. But amiss all the activity, everyone bumps into each other - elbows, knees, feet, and even our voices!
With most of my students coming from immigrant families, they often live with extensive families.
Although space is tight, every home is full of love and care. Even at school, students rarely have a space of their own. With this new rug, that can change.
Students will be able to feel comfortable and ready to learn, with their new whiteboards in their lap, eager to show their thinking!
My Project
As my students nestle into their rug spots, I see that even in the beginning of kindergarten, their growing bodies, elbows, and knees, are already bumping into each other. With the new rug, students' new rug spots would be 164% the size of their current rug spots!
We use our rug for all of our whole-class activities - morning greetings, lessons, read-aloud, energizers - you name it! The new rug would provide students with their own space, without having to worry about brushing up against another student or having to squeeze through bodies to get to their spot.
As kindergarteners, whiteboards allow us to practice and show our thinking freely. In addition, we go "green" by saving paper that would otherwise be used.
Students will be able to learn knowing that their own personal space is respected and that they have ample space to be comfortable while their minds are hard at working comprehending the world around them.
The new rug would allow students to still feel like a cohesive learning community yet not too cramped that they feel as though they never have their own space.
With the new whiteboards, we would be able to practice and show our learning without having to use paper for these tasks.
