Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Growing up with parents from Hawaii always inspired me as a child. My parents would take us on family trips and we would sing in the car while one of them played the ukulele. My dream is to give the opportunity to my students by teaching them the fundamentals of the ukulele. My students love music!
I have a class of 28 spunky second graders this year in an urban school setting.
My students are excited about learning and are bustling with energy. I want to give them as much as I possibly can and hope to offer them something out of the ordinary. Our school is an urban elementary school in a large metropolitan city whose demographics have fluctuated over the 19 years I have taught here. Generations of family members have gone through our school. Some families are low income, some not. Our school has teachers who are always trying to raise the bar for their students and have high hopes and expectations for them as well. We all know each others' students by name. One thing has not changed. The love for the arts and music exist within my wonderful children. These children will benefit greatly from this musical experience.
My Project
In the afternoons, students will be gathered in our school's designated music room. They will be learning about the frets, strings, and finger placement of the ukulele. The children will learn how to strum the ukulele and parent volunteers will help the children in their posture and execution of the notes. They will learn the four major ukulele chords and will hopefully be able to sing a long with them. I hope to teach the children some songs this year that they can perform for their families in their first concert!
Your donation will help to enrich a child's life with the gift of music.
Students will be given an opportunity to learn to play a string instrument and understand the culture and history behind it as well. Music will enhance their learning experience and hopefully give them an appreciation for the arts. It can only make their lives richer and I am ready to give that to them.
