We've just kicked off our year and my new first graders have no idea what's in store for them! It is going to be a fantastic journey as they discover who they are as readers and writers. They are going to do things they never imagined they could do, with my support, and that of people like you!
My students are six- and seven-year-olds who have grown up with technology in their hands.
It's as natural to them as breathing! We have a few desktop computers and a Smartboard in our classroom, but the children are most engaged when the technology is in their hands. Our two iPad minis are rarely idle in this class of twenty busy little bodies! My students especially enjoy working together collaboratively and it is common to see two or three little heads bunched together over an iPad. I love how these opportunities work to strengthen their connections with each other and foster social growth.
My Project
We use the two iPad minis we currently have all day long... in daily literacy rotations to practice reading and writing skills, in math stations to practice math skills, and for special projects including research for writing projects. While extending their learning in the content areas, my students will also be learning and developing lifelong digital literacy skills.
The addition of three more iPad minis will allow me to bring technology into our small group reading and math lessons.
It opens up a world of new resources, especially leveled ebooks, to be used in small group instruction. It will bring a new level of engagement to these lessons that I am eager to tap into!
