My Students

My students love to read! They cannot get enough of chapter books. What they love even more is discussing the books with their peers. Literature circles are exciting for my second graders because they get to discuss what they are thinking as they read.

This is my first year at a new school with new students in a new grade level.

My second graders attend a school that is not Title 1 and so it often gets over looked when it comes to funds. The students come from all walks of life and varying socioeconomic backgrounds. My class works well together and is a bright and inquisitive group.

My Project

I am requesting 19 sets of chapter books for literature circles throughout the year. Each set would have 4 to 5 copies of the book. Not only are literature circles exciting for my second graders, but they also hold them accountable for understanding what they read. They cannot just fly through the book and be done. A literature circle keeps my students reading the same pages, taking a break to think over what they have already read and then share their thoughts and findings with each other. Even though it is a tool to have them think deeply and share their thinking, the kids enjoy it so much more than our typical guided reading. The only road block is that it takes quite a long time for me to acquire multiple copies of each chapter book.

We will not waste valuable reading and discussion time searching for enough copies for the group.
