Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Reading is boring!" Sadly, this is the perception of many of my students. They have not yet discovered the joy of reading, or developed the skills necessary to be effective readers.

Most of my students come from poverty and have missed out on experiences which nurture literacy skills.

Many are learning English as a second language. I also teach a number of students who struggle with learning disabilities. For many of my students, reading is a painful and frustrating task, rather than an enjoyable activity. In spite of these challenges, my classroom is filled with wonderful students who have the potential to learn in spite of the many obstacles they have faced.

My Project

Thanks to the generosity of donations made by Donor's Choose supporters, my students are currently enjoying a subscription to Scholastic's Action Magazine. A renewal of our subscription will continue to provide my struggling readers with this bi-weekly publication. Each issue contains relevant articles and topics, Reader's Theater plays, visual texts, and language arts exercises throughout the magazine which help develop critical literacy skills. The engaging texts are helping build my students' motivation and confidence. Some students even ask if they can take a copy of the magazine home! A continued subscription will expose my students to motivating texts that encourage reading, writing, and thinking skills.

Keeping Action Magazine a part of our classroom will provide struggling students with a resource filled with high-interest texts and opportunities to build the reading skills which they are currently lacking.

Building the interest and confidence of my struggling learners will help them build the literacy skills that are vital to their success.
