Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students want to read throughout the day but are limited due to the shortage of books. Many of my students are below grade level, and I would like for them to be on grade level and prepared for first grade. "It takes a village to raise a child," and it helps when everyone cares about a child's education!
My students are at-risk English Language Learners who come to us with little to no English background.
They are thirsty to learn and love to read. They come to school each and every day with a very low absentee rate. My school is nurturing, loving, and rewarding. The students love coming and cry when it's time to go home. 99% of the students have free lunch, and many are struggling readers. We are working hard to make sure no child is left behind.
My Project
The students will use these books in the classroom with a reading intervention (Guided Reading) program. They will be pre-assessed and grouped with other students that have the same needs. They will work on reading strategies and skills to become successful, independent readers. They will then be assessed on their skills and moved up to the next reading level and given new skills and strategies to learn. They will learn how to read independently, fluently, and how to comprehend text.
This donation will supply my students with a variety of books for my guided reading program.
This will help my students be able to read books on a variety on genres and relate it to Common Core testing. The students will have more motivation and confidence in themselves and be willing to read aloud to their classmates. They will perform better on local and state wide assessments as well.
