My Students

Today's students are accustomed to exciting stimuli and interesting challenges. Students enjoy the exciting challenges literacy centers provide. They are an excellent vehicle for teaching skills and concepts previously taught strictly through pencil and paper.

Our hometown is a small, rural community of approximately 3200 citizens.

My public school class consists of 15, second grade students. There are four second grade classes in our school. Economically, the county in which they live is consistently one of the poorest in the state. In spite of this statistic, our students have been recognized by the DPI as having above state-average test scores for the last 9 consecutive years. The students are well supported by teachers, who care deeply and are extremely dedicated to their success. They are also supported by a strong relationship between parents and teachers.

My Project

This year our school adopted an awesome new reading series. It is based on whole group and small group instruction. Small group instruction is beneficial because it allows for a great teacher/student ratio. However, while working with a small group, the remaining students need to be engaged in authentic literacy centers. Literacy centers help to reinforce skills relating to reading strategies, word work, and basic language structure and composition. Each week, I create 12 new centers, trying hard not to duplicate tasks. This takes hours of work, both in finding ideas in books and on the Internet and in creating the center materials. The payoff of this extra work is that students are actively engaged in the centers during literacy center time. This allows me to devote my attention to students at my guided reading table.

My students absolutely LOVE literacy center time.

I LOVE it. Parents LOVE it. Students love it because the activities are interesting and varied. I love it because it allows for reinforcement of various skills and topics. It also lets me see on a weekly basis how well they are progressing in their mastery of those skills. Parents love it because at the end of every week they are given a packet of their child's work. They can see what and how their son/daughter is doing.
