Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am transitioning from a general education kindergarten teacher to a Special Education Teacher Support Service (SETSS) Provider. I will be working with special needs children who need multi-sensory approaches to meet their goals on their IEP's.
I work in a New York City public school with the special education population.
The children I will be working with need help in literacy and mathematics. Each child is assigned goals that they need to work on and achieve by the end of the school year, along with the goals of the Common Core State Standards. I would like to address their individual needs through a multi-sensory approach.
My Project
My students need math centers and an assortment of leveled books. I would like to use these materials in a small-group setting. I will be working with children in groups of no more than eight children at a time. I would like to host a guided reading group for students so that they can work on specific skills such as phonics and word work. The requested leveled books will allow me to offer a great selection of books to each student at their individual reading level. I would also like to have small groups of hands-on math activities that address the student's individual needs and create a fun learning environment.
This donation will greatly improve the level of engagement there is in the classroom.
Each child will have the ability to work with these activities as a fun way to approach the difficulty of the Common Core and work towards their IEP goals. If children can achieve their goals through fun multi-sensory approaches, their self-esteem and drive will greatly increase.
