My students need a set of 4 iPod Nanos and headphones so they can individually listen to a variety of stories that would otherwise be too difficult to read on their own.
My students love listening to me read during story time. They are also learning to be independent readers. This project will enable them to continue to listen to stories while learning to read independently. This allows for any child to read on their own no matter what level they are at.
We are a public charter school that allows the parents to choose a single-gender or co-educational classroom.
My classroom is filled with 21 eager first grade boys. Over 90% of our school is on free or reduced price lunch and our school population consists mainly of African-American, East-African and Latino. My boys work so hard and are proud to be in our school despite the difficult circumstances they face at home like poverty.
My Project
I plan to use the headphones and iPod Nano for the students to listen to recorded stories during literacy centers. The listening station has always been a favorite for students. It allows for the students to be exposed to all types of literature and informational text no matter what their reading level is. It also helps them learn how to read independently. I have used CD players in the past for this station, but our CD players kept breaking and their little first grade hands had a lot of difficulty handling the CDs and CD players. I plan on using the additional headphones for use on our classroom computers so they can create and express themselves on our kidblog or visit educational websites to further their reading skills.
My goal as a teacher is for my students to develop a deep love for reading.
I want all my children, regardless of their reading level, to be able to choose a book they are interested in and be able to read it cover-to-cover.
