Do you want to see 100% engagement during reading block? If the answer is yes, take a look at the Daily 5!
We reside in a fairly middle class urban neighborhood.
My class is an active group of 5th graders that thrive on structure and routine much like any student needs. This year I am implementing the Daily 5 during guided reading to foster choice, stamina, and independent learning.
My Project
A little background on the Daily 5 is that it is a independent choice driven reading philosophy where every day students choose to enhance their reading through the following principles: 1.) Read to self, 2.) Work on writing, 3.) Word Work, 4.) Read to someone, and 5.) Listen to reading.
This philosophy has proved to be a great management strategy and has also proved to raise reading scores across the board. These activities are not only filled with academics, but also gives the students power to make their learning meaningful.
Forget dumpy centers and meaningless work, hello meaningful reading activities.
I am asking for an 8 person listening center so that I can check out up to date popular audio books from our local library.
This way 8 students can participate in the Listen to Reading component at a time. This is also meaningful because the cost beyond this set up is 100% free. I can get audio books from my library on CD or on my iPad and computer. The center jack hooks up to a headphone jack easily and "ta-da" students get to listen to books that are meaningful to them.
