My Students

In order to become more fluent readers, students need to hear fluent readers actually reading. A listening center will allow students to listen to books on CD or mp3 format. This will also be useful for helping students who are struggling readers to read grade level science texts.

Some of my greatest memories come from listening to books as a child, and I want my students to experience that as well.

I teach at a Title I elementary school in Nevada, where our students come from diverse backgrounds. I usually have 18-23 students in my third grade class. Many of my students come from homes where English is not the first language spoken.

My Project

Listening to books will allow my students to hear the appropriate rate and expression for reading books, expose them to new vocabulary words, and, most importantly, excite them about reading! Struggling readers in my class will still be able to access grade level texts, so that they will not only catch up in reading, but will be able to keep up with their peers.

Sometimes, keeping up with your peers seems like an insurmountable goal when you are a struggling reader.

With the help of donors like you, my struggling readers will increase their skills while accessing grade level materials.
