My students need 2 iPad minis with protective cases for a reading listening center. We also need a classroom subscription of Scholastic News magazine, one copy per student.
Do you remember rewinding the cassette tape to a specific number for your listening center as a child? Today we are lucky enough to have access to technology to use for a listening center, with highly engaging and interactive stories. What better way is there to spark their interest in reading?
I teach 30 diverse, creative and eager 2nd graders who love learning!
In second grade students are at a variety of reading levels with a range of interests, this range allows my students to learn from each other, but poses a challenge when developing curriculum to meet the needs of each student. Using iPads will enhance the reading instruction in my classroom, giving each student a chance to read more high interest stories at their level. By adding weekly copies of Scholastic News, my class will have the opportunity to read and discuss current events.
My Project
As an adult, the majority of the text we read is nonfiction, so teaching students how to understand this genre is essential. Scholastic News is a weekly news magazine for second graders. By adding this weekly, colorful, interesting newspaper to our curriculum we are helping our students become more aware of the world around them, from a kid's perspective. The students will be using the iPads during reading, when they will also be able to access more stories through scholastic online. Students will look forward to their listening center where they will have access to the iPads to read stories at their level. I can't wait to see my students engaged and interacting with their books!
Engaging students in their reading will help develop strong passionate readers, who enjoy reading for learning.
Help spark that interest in reading through providing us with iPads for a listening center and a weekly copy of the high interest news magazine, Scholastic News, geared towards my second graders! These tools will keep my students reading because they will want to learn more and keep reading!
