Lifelong Learning with Laptops

My students need 4 laptops for STEM projects. With new computers, kids will be able to tap into skills and new learnings that will help them beyond high school.

My Students

Even without a program, the students are excited and have been working on their own time to participate in local STEM competitions. Students’ individual talents are left unrealized as a result of a lack of STEM education. The kids want more opportunities to learn and explore the world of STEM.

Our school is a high-achieving school with little funding for any extra-curricular.

Most programs have to raise money on their own for updated equipment and teachers are constantly looking for other opportunities to provide more resources in the classroom. Students are highly motivated, which encourages teachers to work for them. The students consistently look for more opportunities to learn in areas they are interested in, but often without current technology and funding for 21st Century skills and teaching. We have a lot of volunteers who are willing to spend time with kids, but this is not always enough.

My Project

STEM has 4 parts to it-Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Each part will use the computers for different purposes. The Science department requires the use of laptops in order to watch competition videos, as well as watch lectures that teach members the ideas they need to participate at competitions. The Technology department requires computers in order to teach concepts to students, as well as allowing them to experiment with programming on their own. The Technology department currently has fifty-five members and the use of four computers that are borrowed, preventing them from downloading any compilers for the code they write. Students would be able to use new laptops to get everyone involved, as well as try out their code to see if it works. Engineering students build robots, learn how to use power tools. For Math students, they will have access to programs beyond math taught in school yet needed for competitions.

Having laptops readily available would allow for an entirely new branch of learning to take place at school that has no advanced STEM related classes available to students.

Students would no longer be confined to simply what the school has available for them, but would be able to choose a path of learning that they find much more appealing, which can affect their lives far beyond high school into the job field.
