My students are all from the second most impoverished school district in North Carolina. They are eager to learn and learn best by getting their hands on what we are learning! 8th graders have short attention spans and this is the year I want to break through! My goal is to have a STEM classroom.
8th graders.
That sends chills down spines of many. For me, I love them. My students are starting to discover the kind of adult they want to be. They are thirsty for new experiences. They want the chance to explore the world in their own way. I love watching them become amazing human beings. My students are amazing. They are creative, funny, smart, brave, and bold. They have so much potential!
My school has deep roots in the community. Generations upon generations of families have come through our school. In the last decade, extreme job loss has created a deep rift in the community. The ones who feel it most are our students. They feel stuck. Like they will never leave this town. I want nothing more than help to give them their wings to go wherever they want.
My Project
Microscopes are needed in my classroom to see the microscopic world. Three units in the eighth grade curriculum deal with microscopic worlds. These units include talking about microscopic creatures in water, diseases (virus, bacteria, parasites), cell division, chromosomes, and forensic science.
My students will use microscopes to work in teams to discover the tiny world around them. For example, if we are studying phytoplankton in water, we can collect pond water samples and mount slides of the little critters that are in our area! We could also view different cells in stages of cell division.
The ability to have these pieces of equipment in our classroom is invaluable.
My goal as a science teacher is to create a STEM classroom so that my students can acquire real world skills that can translate into any field they want to work in. I want my students to have a foundation so they can be prepared for a world that needs people with STEM skills. These microscopes are a stepping stone to start my vision.
