Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at Leon Springs love the library, but we are falling behind when it comes to having the latest technology. Imagine students using iPads watch book trailers, do research for projects, read ebooks, or watch videos that connect with what they're learning in the classroom!

I don't have any kids of my own, but I have almost 400 of the most wonderful children that I get to work with everyday!

The students here at Leon Springs are happy, motivated, hard-working, curious, eager learners, and we teachers work hard to encourage those traits! No matter the background of the student, we strive to instill grit and determination in the learning process. The library is an integral part of this and the students here love it and use it daily. They are thrilled when we get any new materials, but would be absolutely delighted with more technology on hand in the library.

My Project

In order to connect more with the curriculum students are engaged with in the classroom, I am implementing Museums in the library this year. Each grade level has one Museum that connects with a science or social studies unit they are working on in class. The Museums contain four exhibits with videos, QR codes, hands-on activities, and books. The classes come visit their Museum and then take Research Bags back to the classroom with extension activities. I want the iPads mainly for incorporation into these Museums, so that students can scan QR codes to watch videos or visit pertinent websites. Later, I'd like to use the iPads to incorporate augmented reality through apps such as Aurasma. Students are encouraged to bring their own devices, but it's important to make sure everyone has some access to this technology. In addition to the Museums, I envision the iPads being used to view book trailers, help with research, read ebooks, and more!

Having this technology in the library is really going to open up so many more opportunities for our students to learn, collaborate, and create.

These learning experiences, especially when authentically connected to what students are already learning in the classroom, are invaluable. You would be helping us to take our Library to the next level, and to help make all of our students 21st century learners!
