Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us achieve our big goals in a way that is meaningful for all students! One of our classroom goals is to independently read 10 books. On average my students are reading at a 3rd grade level, but they are in 6th grade! Unfortunately, our school does not provide leveled books.
Memphis, TN is one of the hidden gems of the south and so is the community I work in.
My students are passionate about learning and work very hard. We spend a significant amount of time talking about what they want to be when they grow-up. They share similar dreams of that of more affluent communities. My students want to be doctors, lawyers, teachers, cops, etc. and it is up to us as educators to help them achieve their dreams! We all know how important reading is in any profession and that reality is that my students are reading 2 to 3 years below grade level. If we are to put them on a path that will allow them to make their dreams come true, they need to be reading books from different genres that are also appropriately challenging.
My Project
Imagine walking into a classroom and all students are independently reading books that are engaging and at the appropriate reading level. Imagine my kinesthetic learners, comfortably and thoroughly engaged in a book that she can't stop reading. This is what this project will bring to my classroom. All students want to learn but have different learning needs. While this project doesn't cover all of the learning styles, it closes the gap on the learning style that is most challenging to reach, especially in a reading class, our kinesthetic learners. All students need to be appropriately challenge and this is most evident in kinesthetic learners. Providing them with books that are engaging and in a setting that is most comfortable for them will help push their reading skills. The book selection covers a wide variety of books from different genres and various grade levels. "The Dreamer" will be read as a class, while the other books are expected to be read independently.

I don't just want my students to have dreams; I want to help them come true.
Those who excel are lifelong learners who can independently seek and attain knowledge. Without strong reading skills, this becomes extremely difficult if not impossible. I want my students to excel and I am determined to enrich our classroom with as many reading opportunities as possible! Please help!
