My Students

Reading is dreaming with open eyes. This is a quote that I post in my classroom. I remember reading as a young child, it was so magical. Some students aren't fortunate enough to experience that though. My teachers helped me to fall in love with reading, but that's hard to do without materials.

I teach at a school in West Virginia.

There are over 800 students in our school. The students that I teach are the ones who are below benchmark in reading scores. It is my job and personal goal to help these students become better readers. I also work closely with teachers to ensure the students are getting the best reading instruction within their regular classroom, too. One way in which the students are served within their classrooms as well as when they see me is guided reading lessons. However, the school does not have funding to purchase sets of leveled books for these lessons so that there are enough for small groups of students. The school library is not a resource that has sets of these books either. These students would benefit so much if their teachers and I had access to small sets of leveled books that we could use in guided reading lessons with them.

My Project

The resources that I am requesting include 16 book bins, each with multiple copies of books on certain reading levels, a portable book bin cart, and 2 sets of activity cards that go along with the leveled sets of books. With these resources, I will be able to create a leveled book room at my school. Teachers will be able to access this room to check out a set of books to use with their small groups during guided reading. This will make it possible for each student in the small group to use a copy of the same book throughout the lesson. The books are also leveled by letter so that students will have access to books that are on their level, not too easy or too difficult for them. This will enhance the level of education they are receiving and make it possible for them to fall in love with reading as I did when I was a young child.

Without your donations, I fear that the book room will not be created and the resources will not be purchased. If we don't get access to these sets of leveled books, our students will continue to struggle to learn to read. We can teach them and involve them in lessons, but these sets of books make it possible to take instruction to a whole new level. Please help our students become better readers!
