Imagine watching a video without sound. Many students in the library media center run into this problem when attempting to listen to audio books, practice their phonics skills, and watch educational videos during research due to aged and damaged headphones.
Our library media center services 360 elementary students in grades pre-K to 5th grade.
These students come from a wide variety of economic, racial, and religious backgrounds. Our school seeks to give each student equitable access to resources to improve education including a number of digital resources and devices provided for student use. Students across grade levels use the technology to practice math skills and access supplementary digital resources to their reading curriculum. Upper grades use this technology to complete inquiry projects and do research on a variety of topics. All students love getting their hands on new technology and exploring, and the school faculty works hard to integrate technology experiences into the classroom to provide all students with opportunities to learn through digital media. Technology education is a major component for our school.
My Project
These headphones will replace the damaged and aging sets within the lab which work inconsistently with our newest digital software and resources. Students will be able to listen to a variety of e-books read aloud during our library lessons and research explorations. They will be able to practice their phonics skills by listening to sounds and matching them to the word or picture with a similar sound. Students will be able to listen to educational videos and documentaries during their research. Students will be able to hear their reading and math textbooks read aloud with further explanations. Computers with limited sound or even no sound at all have been very detrimental for the younger students in particular. These new headphones will allow even the youngest students to engage with Ebooks online and follow along with phonics games and practice exercises.
A donation to this project will allow each student access to sound on the computers, meaning that students will no longer need to share computers in order to hear.
Giving students more consistent access to sound means their digital learning experiences will be more consistent as well. No longer will I have to spend time troubleshooting sound issues, but I will be able to use my time to work with struggling students on the content and technology skills we are working on.
