My students need 5 recycling waste containers to implement a plastic recycling project in our high school.

I teach biology and environmental science to high school students in a socio-economically disadvantaged area of Georgia. Most of the families in our community are poor and most of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Because our school system is small and economically disadvantaged, I do not have a lot science equipment to work with and must either make do with home made materials or spend my own money on materials. I would like to start a plastics recycling project at our school to teach student about recycling and reusing plastic products.

Our school system is small and feeling the economic crisis in many ways. One area that has been cut back on is money to fund ideas and/or projects. I would like my students to develop a project for recycling the soda and water bottles they use during the school day.

My students began a home recycling project over the Christmas holidays. They were asked to collect plastic material that they found in their trash for a two week period and bring it school. Fourteen students collected over 140 lbs of plastic trash. A local recycling center will take the plastic material for free and a parent has donated their pick up for transporting the materials. My students were very excited about the amount of plastic collected and now want to continue the recycling in their school. To do this, we need five 23-gallon recycling bins in our lunch room to place the drink bottles that the students use during the day.

With your donation you will make it possible for students who typically don't care where their trash goes to become more environmentally aware of the impact they have on the ecosystem. You will be empowering my student with a sense of community service and environmental stewardship which typically is not seen in a depressed socio-economic area like ours.
