Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Kindergartners at my school will be learning about animals that live in the wild, ocean, and on the farm. We will be exploring what all of these animals need and learn their body parts, movements, and names of their offspring. Many have never seen these animals in person.
We are a charter school in California whose focus is to be 'college ready, college bound'.
We are 48 Kindergarten students who are English Language Learners and go to school for 195 days. The Kindergarten students learn reading and writing through the Workshop model and investigate science themes using FOSS kits.
My Project
As a Kindergarten teacher for 14 years, I have noticed a trend where my students can not relate to, understand, or are unmotivated when it comes to animals. All the picture books, videos, puzzles, and manipulatives can't replace seeing and feeling the real thing. We will be visiting the local aquarium to touch animals, explore the beach, and learn about beach conservation. Our next step is to go to a farm sanctuary to get a tour of the facility and then get to interact with the animals. We will learn their needs and how to read their body language. We will be seeing them in person so we can use all of our 5 senses to take in this unique experience.
If we truly want to expose our students to science then experiential trips are a necessity.
Well planned out units that have a purpose in bringing back our experience to the classroom is crucial. We are not going on a field trip just to get out of school for a day. We will be making powerful connections and experience once in a lifetime learning opportunities with our classmates.
