This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students and their families range from low to middle income. I have some students who have their own iPads at home, and some who had never even touched an iPad. Our school is a public elementary school that is beginning to implement the CommonCore curriculum, which has an emphasis on writing.
About 75% of my students are language learners.
They are very eager to learn and are engaged when we have technology support. Our technology tools are limited, however. We have not had updated computers at our school for about 7 years. Our school is one of 21 schools in a large metropolitan area.
My Project
I am requesting a single iPad, which will be used in my second grade classroom. The iPad is an incredible tool that has the potential to change the way teachers teach and students learn. Students in my classroom will use the iPad as a tool for learning. They will be able to use it for research, reading, tutorial applications, sharing their learning, and presenting projects to their peers. Students will learn valuable 21st century skills with the iPad, which will better equip them for their future in both education and eventually the work force. These valuable skills include researching and locating information, publishing work in a variety of ways, and creatively presenting information to classmates. The iPad is an important tool for meeting the needs of today's students and inspiring them to explore, create, and collaborate!
I have an opportunity to pilot new writing software for the iPad especially designed for the Common Core curriculum. This grant will help make this happen.
This project will help create a model of 21st century learning for our school and district.
Since 1/2 of our students have iPads at home the use of the device in the classroom will really help support learning beyond the classroom.
