My students need storage containers, labels, and organizers to help create an efficient art studio. We hope to organize our artwork, art supplies, and recycled materials.
According to Mark Rothko, "Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take risks."
YOU can help our student artists in their creative explorations!
This grant would directly affect 250 Pre-School through Grade 5 students at our District of Columbia Public School in Washington, D.C.
While our school staff strives to meet high standards, our school faces many challenges unfortunately common in urban schools. Our Title 1 school serves a diverse group of students, with 12% receiving English Language Learner support and 25% receiving Special Education support. Due to funding challenges, this year was the first time in many years that the school has hired an art teacher. I have enjoyed building relationships with students and guiding their exploration through the world of art. Our student artists are curious, creative, and eager to try new things!
My Project
The room that we use for art classes is also used for small group academic interventions, after-school tutoring, and as a computer lab. While this classroom has some positive features like the wall of windows, it lacks storage options, sinks, and appropriate furniture. Our art studio is in definite need of storage options for art supplies, teacher resources, artwork "in process", cleaning supplies, and recycled materials for future sculptures. With these new resources, each of my classes could have their own bin to store their 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional artwork. Also, these organizational solutions will help students take ownership and responsibility in maintaining an efficient art studio.
"Without the studio, however humble, the room where the imagination can enter cannot exist."-Anna Hansen
With these flexible and user-friendly organizational solutions, we can create a more welcoming art studio.
As we clear out the visual clutter, our student artists will be able to focus more on being artists.
As Henri Matisse once declared, "Creativity takes courage." Thank you for supporting our student artists in taking courageous risks in the art studio and beyond!
