My Students

Imagine being able to make your own salad from start to finish. My students struggle with understanding that what we learn in Science has a practical application.

Most of my students live in rental homes, apartments, or hotels.

My school is in an urban area, and students do not have the opportunity to grow plants and understand how a simple vegetable garden could provide fresh produce for their family and reduce food costs for their family. My school is a Title 1 school with more than 50% of the population receiving free or reduced lunches.

My Project

The students will build the raised garden beds in the late fall and to have them ready for the spring planting. Students will complete science activities during the winter months to start growing vegetables indoors. The students will use the plants to compete for the school science fair. When the plants are ready they will be transplanted outdoors in the raised beds. The parents will be invited to come to a dinner which will be made with the plants from their garden. They will also show the parents how to make raised garden beds for their own home. By including their families it will give students an extra incentive to insure full participation.

My students will learn life long skills that can impact their own families lives both nutritionally as well as economically.

I also want my students to see the connection from the "book" to real life.
