In my classroom, I try to make learning as fun as it can possibly be! My students explore and learn with their senses and there is no better way to do that than with the sensory table.
My classroom services students grades kindergarten through third grade who have special needs.
They all come from rural under-privileged homes and have had to overcome so much in their young lives. Regardless of their backgrounds, they come to school every day eager to learn.
My Project
In my room, my students have sensory processing issues. That means that they have a hard time making sense of the messages that their brains are constantly giving them. In turn, they may act out emotionally or behaviorally. I use my sensory table daily to help the kids explore textures, smells, and sights. This helps calm them and teaches them coping skills when dealing with being overwhelmed. The peas, snow, sand, and duckies will be activities for our sensory table.
I'm confident that these supplies will give my students an opportunity to learn some coping skills when dealing with the feeling of being on sensory overload.
They should soothe them and also teach them to be less tactile defensive. When they have their sensory issues in better control, they are in a better frame of mind to learn.
