My students need to be encouraged to write with blank books and art supplies including wiggly eyes, glitter, stampers and more. I would love for each child to publish a story they have written and illustrate the pages.

My Students

My challenge is to keep our students motivated and interested in writing. What better way to encourage a child to write by promising them the opportunity to publish their story in a hard cover book. This would be a great keepsake of their writing and something they could cherish for many years.

I work in a second grade classroom with a high number of EL students.

Our school is a Title 1 school where most of the students receive free lunch. Our students are currently performing below grade level in Language Arts state tests and they are struggling with the English language.

My Project

Children can be motivated by the simplest things. I feel I can encourage better writing if children know that they will get to design, create, and publish a book on their own. The collage materials will be a great motivator because they will be able to design their cover of their book. The children will produce better work knowing that this book will be a book that they could put in a home library and read to family members and friends.

By providing these materials, you will help my students to foster a love for writing and encourage them to write stories.

The students will go through the whole writing process which includes, writing, editing, and finally publishing. Not only will they learn essential writing skills but they will also use communication skills, be engaged in their learning, and learn how to be problems solvers as they create and publish a story of their own.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
