My students need another 3D printer to keep up with their designs! I was able to buy one last year through a grant and students LOVE 3D printing! Help us reach more kids!
3D printing and Modeling is part of the future that our students will live in. This technology seems very futuristic, but we are living in a time when it is becoming more accessible. Our students have used one printer, but for use in the classroom, we need another as printing takes hours!
My students are from a small rural town in Massachusetts.
They come from blue-collar, working class families. Many of them work on farms. Because of their working class roots, they are very hard working individuals. They are extremely self motivated. All have used computers before, while some families still do not have a lot of technology at home. Along with being hard working, they are also a good students; polite, respectful, and kind to one another. They have a strong desire to learn and enjoy using technology in the classroom.
Our school is made up of over 550 students in varying ability levels. Middle School is a time of discovery and I am excited to use my classes to show this technology to our students and to help other teachers implement it into their lesson plans.
Students are VERY excited about 3D printing. In the short time I have done this, students are creating Ornaments, cards, cups, hooks and models. All these activities help promote STEM education.
My Project
This was the first year that I made a project where 6th graders designed and printed Holiday ornaments. It was a VERY big undertaking! One that I did not fully realize the scope until I started, as all the students were excited about printing their work, then the process took hours for each to be printed and we have one printer. This second printer will help take some of the stress off our first, as well as help students see the diversity of 3D printer options available today.
The printer will be available for other teachers and students outside of my class times. This will allow students who are interested in developing their own skills to come and print their work.
This donation would help us create a maker space in our school with a section focused directly on 3D fabrication.
Our students will all have access to a computer and printer to 3D print a design that they create using a 3D modeling software.
Students will feel the excitement of creating an object that solves a problem. It might be a small problem that they solve, but I am hopeful that they excitement generated from that, will help our students to pursue more projects related to STEM subjects.
