I believe reading is empowering, and it is beautiful. Though, for struggling readers, reading can be a daunting and overwhelming task. My students feel like "real" and successful readers when they engage with graphic novels. They are motivated by these texts and need more exposure to them.
My 90 fifth grade students are a group of fun-loving and growing readers!
We are divided among 3 classes and meet daily for 1 hour. The reading levels of my students are varied, reaching from the beginning of 2nd grade. We are a public-school located in a rural Kentucky county. Approximately forty percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch services.
My Project
As we conclude our school year in June, these graphic novels will be a fantastic culminating unit for us. From making inferences, identifying text features, noting the development of characters, and identifying theme within a text - these highly-engaging texts will provide my students the opportunity to put their learning into action. Applying the 'skills' we have learned this school year to graphic novels will build my students' confidence in their reading ability, as well as, their mastery of the 5th grade Common Core.
These graphic novels with be fantastic learning resources in our unit of study, as well as, highly sought after additions of our classroom library.
The best way to become a better and more fluent reader is to read more!
These graphic novels will engage, support, and motivate my struggling readers.
I teach because I love kids, and I believe learning is beautiful. I want students leaving my classroom knowing that they are dearly loved and that reading is wonderful. Your donation will develop my student's desire to read! Thank you.
