My Students

"Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I'll remember. Involve me, I'll understand." My students want to record their own lessons and share them with students in other sixth grade students. I want to include assessments that demonstrate student learning as they teach the concepts they've learned.

My students are enthusiastic, self-motivated learners who want to share their discoveries with others.

As we explore the scientific method, they know that real scientists communicate their findings with others. We live in a small, rural county where students do not always get to make a connection to the real world. Technology in our building is old and outdated. Budgetary woes have hit us particularly hard as local and state funding is cut. Resources are being focused on instructional positions, with technology taking a back burner to personnel. This is an opportunity to put technology in the hands of future scientists and leaders!

My Project

I am requesting a video camera with a tripod and 2 memory cards for my students because at various points throughout the year, I've had students who have missed demonstrations, labs and class instruction that are difficult to make up. Several of my students have volunteered to recreate our classroom experiences using video. That gave me the idea of using video presentations as a way to assess their learning as well. Small groups of students will be assigned the concepts we've covered in class to present a teaching demonstration video that will then be used to enhance and review instruction with other students. My students will demonstrate their mastery of the material by teaching it to someone else. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to work with technology to upload their learning to share.

Beyond the scientific concepts they will learn and teach, these students will practice group communication and leadership skills as they plan and execute their lessons. Only when you can teach someone else, have you truly learned the lesson. When they go home and practice teaching a concept to family members,etc., they internalize what they've learned. That's a WIN for everyone.
