My students need different Lego pieces to build projects: the LEGO Education Brick Set has over 800 pieces and Mindstorms EV3 will also provide options for building.
Every child wants to use their imagination to build, to learn, and to understand how things work. At the TREK Center we have between 250-300 students who come each week. Students are challenged to "Think Outside the Box" every day. A Lego Lab will give them opportunities to build what they imagine.
The TREK Center will service gifted students in third through fifth grade.
We are located in Appalachia and many of our students do not have opportunities to experience learning that other students may. When students are identified as gifted they are invited to learn at TREK. Students choose the subjects they want study. We are behind the times in technology and engineering. Classes that are offered include Chemistry, Biology, Art, Drama, and Geography as well as many others.
We are housed in an elementary school that is centrally located in our district and students are bused in from 19 elementary schools. Each day students rotate through four classes. We pride ourselves on offering curriculum that is challenging and different than what is offered in a regular classroom.
We are hoping to add a Lego Lab to our offerings and in the future also a robotics lab.
My Project
Students will be participating in engineering challenges. We will be sponsoring Lego team(s) for competitions locally and at the state level. Legos will be used for STEM activities. In science they can be used to illustrate basic scientific principles. We can use them to build simple machines.
Legos will be integrated into literature lessons: re: build a model of the setting of the story or create a sculpture of character from the book.
will help students work together to solve problems, help them to get creative, and have fun learning.
Giving students the opportunity for hands on learning is a top goal of TREK.
This project will give TREK (Thinking, Reasoning, Enrichment Klass) students the opportunity to experience hands on learning.
This lab will help to extend their thinking and learning. When TREK students are asked about what they learn while here they often reply, "Everything and we have fun doing it." All children need to have the opportunity to explore their thinking.
